🌟 What Is “Beyond the Classroom”?

Dear Students,

You may have started seeing the name 🌟 Beyond the Classroom in our communications, activities, workshops and around campus.

I wanted to take a moment to explain what it means—and why I created it.

Beyond the Classroom is SELC’s student experience initiative.

The idea behind it is simple: your education is important, but your student experience is bigger than your classroom.

While studying, you are also building a life, developing a career, managing finances, making connections, adapting to a new environment, learning about Canada and preparing for what comes next.

I wanted to bring together the different opportunities and support we offer students under one common purpose.

Through Beyond the Classroom, you will see initiatives related to career development, immigration information, financial literacy, health and wellness, banking and insurance, student benefits, community partnerships, networking, social activities, cultural experiences, trips and opportunities to connect with other students.

You will also see Beyond the Classroom in different ways throughout your SELC journey:

I will regularly share opportunities with you through LMS and Class365—not only telling you what is happening, but also why it may be valuable to you.

🌟 Connection & Belonging
Activities, workshops, orientations, partnerships and social opportunities are designed to help you connect with people, resources and experiences beyond your academic program.

🌟 A More Personal Connection
Susana from Student Services and I will also be visiting classrooms regularly. These are not academic or instructor evaluations. They are simply an opportunity for us to stay connected with you, share useful information, listen to you and make sure you know where to go when you need support.

My goal is for Beyond the Classroom to become something you recognize throughout your time at SELC—not as one event or one program, but as part of the SELC student experience.

And whether you are just starting today, halfway through your program, or only a few weeks away from graduating, Beyond the Classroom is for you.

At the heart of it is one message:

We see you. We care about your experience. And we want you to succeed as a whole person.

I hope you will take advantage of what we are building—and, just as importantly, tell us what you would like to see next. This initiative should continue to grow with our students.

Welcome to a New Chapter at SELC

Dear Students,

A warm welcome to everyone who started a new program with us this September—and to all of our continuing and returning students.

Whether you are brand new to SELC, an SELC alumnus returning for another program, somewhere in the middle of your journey, or getting closer to completing your program, I want you to know something important:

We believe in you.

Every student’s journey is different. There will be exciting moments, challenging days, accomplishments you are proud of, and perhaps moments when you question yourself. September is a great opportunity to reset, refocus and remind yourself why you started.

My encouragement to you this month is simple:

Start Strong. Stay Connected.

Here are my Top 5 Tips for Success at SELC:

1. Show up.
Attend your classes, arrive on time, participate and be present. Consistency may seem simple, but it is one of the most powerful ingredients for success.

2. Ask for help before a small problem becomes a big one.
If you are struggling academically, financially, personally, or simply don't know what to do next, please talk to us. You do not have to wait until things become overwhelming before asking for support.

3. Get involved Beyond the Classroom.
Your experience in Canada is about more than earning a diploma. Attend workshops, career sessions, activities, walking tours and social events. Meet students outside your program, connect with our partners, explore Vancouver and build your network and community.

4. Take responsibility for your journey.
Check your SELC email, LMS, Class365 and Teams regularly. Know your deadlines, attendance requirements and responsibilities. Your instructors and our staff are here to guide and support you—but your success begins with you.

5. Remember why you started.
There may be difficult days. When they happen, reconnect with the reason you chose this journey and the future you are working toward. Every class you attend, assignment you complete and challenge you overcome is another step forward.

Get to know your instructors and our staff. Ask questions. Participate. Make connections. Take advantage of the opportunities available to you—and don't let your experience become only school → work → home → repeat.

📢 MANDATORY WELCOME ORIENTATION – THIS FRIDAY!

Dear Students,

Our next SELC College Welcome Orientation is this Friday, September 18, and attendance is MANDATORY.

Who must attend?

Every student must attend the Welcome Orientation for their CURRENT program.

This applies regardless of when you started at SELC, how long you have been studying with us, or whether this is your first or second SELC program.

⚠️ If you attended an orientation for a PREVIOUS program, you are still required to attend the orientation for your CURRENT program.

The only exception is if you have already attended the Welcome Orientation for the program you are currently taking.

Please remember: Completing the registration form is not an indication of interest or an RSVP. By registering, you are confirming that you WILL attend the mandatory orientation.
